What's The Best Edition Of Minecraft?

written by RichCat06 on January 10, 2025

I thought I might stray away from the usual online privacy topics and delve into a topic I feel I should discuss: video games. And the video game I'm discussing today is Minecraft. The game has had many editions tailor-made for many platforms, but today I'll discuss the three core editions: Java (the main edition since the beginning, only available on PCs,) Legacy Console (an edition that was basically a C++/C# port of Java for consoles, no longer developed,) and Bedrock (formerly known as Pocket Edition.)

Java Edition

This was the edition that started it all. It's where it all began. It's not a bad edition, but it has its faults. First and foremost, the render and simulation distance are combined, making for a huge dip in game performance. Second, it's only available on computers, so no cross-compatibility with consoles. And finally, it doesn't run that well on slower computers without the Optifine addon. Other than that, it's a pretty good version of the game, and you just can't go wrong with it, as it is the original edition of the game.

Legacy Console Edition

This was basically a C++/C# version of the Java Edition that was tailor-made for consoles. It was available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, the Nintendo Switch, and WiiU. Seeing someone play this edition of the game on YouTube (the Xbox 360 Edition to be exact) hit me with a wave of nostalgia. This was the first edition that I ever played. I built a lot of things on there, and made so many memories. Unfortunately, they discontinued this edition of the game in 2018 after the Better Together update. The last major update for legacy console edition (excluding the PS4 edition) was the Aquatic Update. However, PS4 was an exception, and they got the Village and Pillage Update in 2019. This version had a polished feel to it, similar to that of Java Edition. It was less buggy than the Bedrock Edition, and redstone worked properly here, unlike Bedrock.

Bedrock Edition

And now we end here with the version currently available on game consoles. When it was first rolled out, there were a shit-ton of bugs, and everyone hated it. But it's been several years since then, and it came a long way from being the buggy port of Pocket Edition that it once was. Yes, redstone still doesn't work right, but it's the same codebase as the legacy console edition, and that means they can fix it pretty easily. The textures in this game are a lot more vibrant than they are on other editions. But all in all, the edition itself is pretty solid so far. Can't wait to see what they do with it!!

Conclusion

In my personal opinion, I think the best edition ever was the Legacy Console Edition. It was the most stable edition on consoles, and had a polished look and feel that was simply unmatched. I was heartbroken when I found out they were discontinuing this version. It was such an amazing experience to play it!
