Apple's smart watches are pretty trendy nowadays, but they come at a hefty cost. There are way cheaper alternatives to smart watches commonly called calculator watches. They pretty much do the same thing as smart watches do, but they're a little more stripped down, which may make these more appealing to minimalists than anyone else. Casio is the most famous example of a company that makes these types of watches. So, without further ado, let's get this debate started!
Apple claims that they care about your privacy, but they're just about as bad as every big tech company out there because they don't care about your privacy like they love to claim they do. With Casio calculator watches being much more stripped down than an Apple Smart Watch, privacy would be the least of your worries because it's a DUMB DEVICE! Dumb devices are much more private because most of them are not capable of collecting your data. (If you would like to read more into dumb devices, take a look at my list of dumb alternatives to smartphone apps.) Apple's smart watches are horrendously overpriced, much like their other devices. They only have that high price tag because there are people out there stupid enough to overspend on some company ecosystem instead of actually paying for a good product. Casio gets one point for privacy.
Again, as overpriced as Apple's products are, some people may argue that smart watches have heart monitors while calculator watches do not. That may be true, but what about physical value? Okay. Ask yourself this question: would you rather pay $200 for a fancy-pants watch with smartphone features that'll only last you until the man says so, or pay $20 for a simple, yet useful watch with only a calculator feature and stopwatch functionality that'll last you a lifetime (that is discounting how long the internal battery lasts, which already lasts a pretty long time.) Casio gets another point for physical value here.
Apple's smart watches have the upper hand here in terms of the amount of features they have, so this is a bit of a no-brainer. Apple gets a point here for this.
WHICH ONE IS BETTER?
While the features and functionality of both are great, the winner here (at least in my opinion,) is the Casio calculator watch. It is much more private and has much more physical value than any smart watch.
