Today, we're gonna look at a very unique artist who has fascinated me to no end with his work. Not only is his music unique and just, well, one-of-a-kind, the way he releases it is also one-of-a-kind. He's made over 100 albums since he started making them in 1978 (and for the record, the thumbnail I used for this post is not one of his album covers, just some really cool fan art I found on Reddit!) I found him on Wikipedia as I was researching outsider music cause I had been doing a deep dive into Daniel Johnston's work, and I have to say, the music is very unconventional, but it's tastefully done. Very emotional in a way, while also being very cryptic and dark. Out-of-tune guitar, a man singing in his own rather unique way, and an atmosphere that's akin to someone's bedroom or basement. The only artists I could really compare him to are Bon Iver, XXXTentacion, Neil Young, or Bob Dylan. The music on Jandek's records has a quality of being very bad, but also very good at the same time. The man himself is quite an enigmatic figure as well. But given his nature, I'm not gonna talk about him, as he wants to be recognized more for his work than who he is as a person. He kinda wants to be in the shadows, making his music on his own accord. And I get it. I'm not a recluse by any means, but I'm a somewhat private person who doesn't like to be the center of attention. Anyways, he kinda changed the way I listen to music. It messed me up in a way when I first listened to it. Knocked my chakras way out of alignment. There's little known about the man himself, but he wants his listeners to treat his music like a jigsaw puzzle. He releases it under his own independent record label, Corwood Industries. He rarely does interviews, and the only way you can really reach him is through a PO box in Houston. If you write a letter to him inquiring about his music, he may very well send you a couple of CDs and a vague answer. To me, he seems like just a normal, nice, polite guy who just so happens to make music in his spare time. That's what fascinates me about him, that he has this somewhat sizeable cult following, yet he just keeps making music the way he wants to do it, and doesn't care what others think. He's special to me, and I love his work.
Anyway, I'm gonna finish this off with a few links to some of his work and some of the media that's been made about him:
