My Newfound Love For Vinyl Records

vinyl records

My auntie gave me a bunch of her old vinyl records (some of them original pressings from the 70s,) and I have to say, I've been obsessed with playing them ever since I got them. I always thought that I wouldn't enjoy them as much as I have, but I was dead wrong. These things are awesome!! Below, I have listed 3 reasons why I love them and why everyone should use them.

1. The Tactile Experience

Handling records oddly satisfied a sensory thing for me. Taking it out of the sleeve, putting it on the platter, gently dropping the needle on the record, just hoping that I got it in the lead-in groove. Then, there's the snap, crackle and pop of the record. I love CDs, they will always be my physical format of choice, but you just don't get the same feel from CDs as you do with records.

2. Sound Quality

Although this is up for debate, and kind of a sore subject with audiophiles, my take on this is that CDs objectively sound better, but there's a certain warmth to records that CDs or tapes just don't have, and that could win some people over in terms of sound quality (some people like that.) I've come to love both though. They both have redeeming qualities of their own. I just like CDs more cause they're cheaper and easier to access. They're much more ubiquitous, and the collector's tax on them isn't ridiculously high like it is with records.

3. It's A Gateway Drug Into Physical Media For The Younger Generation

If you look at sales statistics for physical media regarding music, vinyl records are the #1 best selling physical media regarding new releases. That's incredible. Most people are buying these for aesthetic reasons, but it does show a steer towards physical media. The younger generations should be using more physical media in my honest opinion.
