I've used CD boomboxes and Discmen before, but I've never really had an actual full-blown system until today, when a good friend of mine dropped her old one off at my house. The device we're looking at today is the Panasonic SG-H10. These were made during the late 80s and early 90s (this particular unit being made in 1990, and evidently, it's not ashamed of it, evidenced by the simulated wood-grain finish on both the shelf and the speaker cabinets.) The speakers sound full. Smooth, thick, and detailed, ensuring you'll hear even the quietest pin-drop in a song. They can get quite loud too. I don't have to turn it up but halfway to get it to the point where it's almost too loud for me. Initially, the previous owner had added a Symphonic CD-5800 (5-disc CD changer,) but the player was completely knackered when I tried using it, so I just thought "to hell with trying to fix this thing" and just hooked up my DVD player to it. (I will be looking through the thrift store to find a working component CD player that sounds good, and will actually work with it. I'll test it with two CDs: some compilation of reggae instrumentals that the previous owner gave me, and a test cd I initially burned to test K3b's burning capabilities, and it's safe to say, it's not a bad piece of software.) I also want to add a bluetooth receiver to it to bring it into the modern age (just imagine your Pandora playlist playing on these speakers while you're doing your laundry. Isn't that vision just beautiful?) The previous owner also gave me all her mix CDs, and boy, don't get me started on them! For a lady of her age, she listens to some very chique and modern stuff (I saw a Bruno Mars deep cut on a few of her mix CDs from way back when! That's NUTS!! Pretty cool, if you ask me.) To finish this short review off, I must say that the speakers are the best part of this system. They sound so full, detailed, and rich, that you could even hear the subtle background noise in the music. It's just magnificent. So, if anyone nearby or anyone you know is looking to get rid of a stereo system like this, take your changes, and get it! You won't regret it!
